Better: Replace broken part (contactor); complete cleaning of AC unit, which will extend life of new part.

In this scenario, if after a straightforward replacement, the contactor goes bad again, the homeowner can look back at the proposal from the first call and see that they were given the option to invest in a longer-term solution.

Good ($8,500): A single-stage system around 14.3 SEER2, a standard programmable thermostat, and a 5-year parts warranty. It's correctly sized, code-compliant, and reliable. For a homeowner on a tight budget or planning to move in a few years, this is a sound choice.
Better ($11,500): A two-stage system around 17 SEER2, a smart thermostat, and a 10-year parts warranty. The two-stage compressor runs longer and quieter at lower capacity, which improves comfort and trims energy bills. This is the option most homeowners land on.
Best ($15,500): A variable-speed, high-efficiency system at 18 to 20-plus SEER2, full smart controls, an indoor air quality package, and a 10-year parts and labor warranty. Add zoning or ductwork improvements where the load calculation calls for them. This is for homeowners who want the lowest running costs, the most even comfort, and the longest coverage.
Notice what happens across the tiers. The jump in price tracks a real jump in energy savings, comfort, and warranty, so the conversation moves off price and onto value. Tag the "Better" option as your "Contractor's Choice" and you give the undecided homeowner a clear place to land.
2. Service: A Repair That Turns Into Recurring Revenue
The same logic works on a service call, and it's where most contractors leave money on the table. Take the faulty contactor from earlier. Built out as a proper proposal, it looks like this:
Good ($225): Replace the failed contactor and confirm the system is cooling. The customer's immediate problem is solved.
